Lion Gopinath Mohanty was born on 27th September 1948 in the village Srijang in Balasore District of a historical repute. Disobedience movement against payment of Chaukidari Tax was launched for the first time in the country in 1930 in the village Srijang and the torture perpetrated by British Government rocked the nation. His father was a freedom fighter and took lead in the Movement.
Gopinath Mohanty was a meritorious student and occupied 15th rank in the state in matriculation examination from Khantapara High School. He was a recipient of National Scholarship from 1st year Science to end of M.Sc. He passed B.Sc. (Hons) from F M College, Baleshwar and M.Sc. in Physics from Utkal University, Vanivihar. Later he passed Law Degree from Madhusudan Law College, Cuttack.
He worked as Lecturer in Physics in D.K. College, Jaleswar and Stewart Science College, Katak. Later he joined Administrative Service and held important positions like SDO, Dhenkanal and Bargarh. Collector & District Magistrate Dhenkanal & Angul districts. Director, Text Book Production & Marketing, Employment, Tourism, Culture, SC &ST, SC & ST RTL. He worked as Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Revenue & Disaster Management Department, Culture
Department & Information & Public Relations Department with distinction.
He Joined Lionism in 1982 in Lions Club Dhenkanal, became its President in 1983-84. He took Lionism to interior villages by way of organizing different Health & Educational activities. He again became the charter President of Lions Club of Bhubaneswar Crown in 2002-03. He was Zone Chairperson in 2003-04 and Region Chairperson in 2006-07. He also held other cabinet posts like Cabinet Advisor and District Chairperson Lions Bhawan. He was instrumental in getting a plot of land for Lions Bhawan for District 322 C2 at Bhubaneswar from State Government. He has received many International, Multiple & District Awards. He has also received 6 nos. of International President’s Appreciation Certificate. He was adjudged as the best Lion in the Multiple during 2006-07,
As working President of State Level Vyasa Kabi Fakir Mohan Smruti Samsad, he is taking pioneering role in documentation of Culture at micro-level with a maiden venture in the country. The organization has already published 14 volumes of Cultural Heritage of Odisha district-wise in English. Each volume contains authentic articles on Geography, History, Archaeology, Culture, Literature, Economics & Modern aspects of the district.
